Surrendering to Sequins

Ann,

One word for Holiday 2011: sequins.  They’re everywhere.  In every color. Big and small. Day and night.  Sequins sequins sequins.  Celebrities are wearing them head-to-toe:

I don’t know about you, but in the olden days, when I thought of sequins, I thought of this:

Sequin Queen

Or maybe a mother of the bride wearing a mauve sequin jacket.  But now sequins are run of the mill. They are a trend that has run rampant through our closets.  Sequins are on sweaters, dresses, t-shirts wraps and shoes.  I just saw today that Land’s End has seized the trend with a sequin v-neck sweater — who knew??  And sequins are not always all sewn together.  They can be sprayed onto fabric like stars in the sky.   Sequins are fun and chic but can turn not-at-all-chic (a.k.a. cheesy) if one doesn’t exercise caution.  It’s all about the balance. If you have a sequin pencil skirt, wear a silk blouse or cashmere sweater.  If you have a sequin dress, go for not-shiny shoes.  If you go with sequin shoes….well, that’s all the sequin you can have in one outfit.

Or more demure:

And, of course, my favorite:

Christian Louboutin Glitter Peep-toe Pumps

But they’re sold out…everywhere!

We have a ton of sequin in the store now from Susana Monaco, Tibi, and Alice + Olivia that are great for day and evening.  Mostly evening, I’d say.

And if that’s all too much for you, you can always throw in a few sequins on your wraps and scarves.   At Julia Farr, we carry a gorgeous collection of wraps from Shawlsmith London — I’m going to send you photos of them next week. Stay tuned. Until then, Ann, if you’re looking to spice up a holiday look, add sequins and stir.
