Spring 2012 – Pastels

Julie,

I know pastels are in for spring, but, even I, a woman who LOVES color, is somewhat put off by the ooey-goey-ishness of cotton-candy pink, lemon yellow and sea-foam green.  They all feel a little bit (dare I say it?) young for someone our age.

I know pastels are probably here to stay for a while, since the colors are featured by such trend-setting designers as Louis Vuitton

Chanel

and Ralph Lauren

How can I wear this trend without looking like a reject from the Easter Bunny’s entourage?

Ann,

I’m with you. A little pastel goes a long way.  I think it’s easier to go with a pale pink, lavender or ice blue paired back to a darker anchor neutral — navy, khaki, pale grey — than to be head-to-toe seafoam.  Even a paler pastel with the darker shade of the same color can make it palatable.  But let me contradict myself here — edgy emerging designer, Karolina Zmarlak, created a fabulous suede skirt in both pale aqua and pale lemon with complimentary-shaded tops that were completely lush and gorgeous — and not at all too youthful.  The places you can wear such pale tones are limited, but the look is outrageously stunning.

Although I didn’t jump all over this trend for spring collections at Julia Farr, I have brought in a few pieces I think are chic and  current but could span more than a season.  For example, from Alice + Olivia, the Ruby Tweed Dress in pale pink, silver and white–

Here’s a closer look at the dress — which is great for all your Spring parties.

The rhinestone brooch is detachable!

And on Friday, we received our first shipment from the fabulous collection of Raoul. Pastel shades were throughout their Spring ’12 Collection.  Here are two pieces I loved and are now hanging:

The Short Sleeve Timless Blouse by Raoul. $275 at Julia Farr

(Perfect worn with a darker caramel/khaki pencil skirt for spring and vanilla colored linen pants for summer)

and

The Laetitia Dress by Raoul.  $425 at Julia Farr

I think you could carry off this look with a great pair of platform nude patent heels (open-toe or not).  And the the Easter Bunny would be thrilled to have you along for the ride!
